INBody Composition Assessment

INBody Composition Assessment

What Is an InBody Assessment?

An InBody Assessment is a non-invasive body composition scan that measures muscle mass, body fat, water balance, and metabolic health. Unlike a standard scale, it provides a detailed picture of your body composition and overall health.

At Vitality by Dr. Bago, InBody scans are used to support weight loss, hormone optimization, fitness, and wellness programs by tracking progress with objective data.

What Does It Measure?

  • Body fat percentage
  • Skeletal muscle mass
  • Visceral fat levels
  • Body water balance
  • Basal metabolic rate (BMR)
  • Muscle distribution by body region

Preparing for Your Scan

For the most accurate results:

  • Avoid eating or drinking for 3–4 hours before testing
  • Avoid exercise for 4–6 hours beforehand
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours prior
  • Wear light clothing and remove metal accessories

Why It Matters

An InBody Assessment helps identify whether you’re losing fat, gaining muscle, or maintaining a healthy body composition, allowing for more personalized and effective treatment plans.

What Is InBody Assessment Preparation?

To ensure the most accurate results, patients should follow these preparation guidelines before their InBody assessment:

  • Avoid eating or drinking for three to four hours before the test
  • Do not exercise in the four to six hours prior to the assessment
  • Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours beforehand
  • Use the bathroom before the test to remove unnecessary water weight
  • Remove shoes, socks, and any metal accessories before stepping on the device
  • Avoid heavy sweating, saunas, or steam rooms on the day of the test
  • Wear light, minimal clothing for consistent measurements

Patients who are pregnant, have a pacemaker, or have implanted electronic medical devices should inform our clinical team before the assessment, as BIA technology is not appropriate for all individuals.

Frequently Asked Questions

They measure the same things but use different technology. DEXA uses low-dose X-ray and is considered the reference standard for body composition. InBody uses bioelectrical impedance, which is non-invasive, involves no radiation, and produces results that compare closely with DEXA for most patients. For clinical monitoring purposes, InBody is highly practical and accurate enough to guide meaningful treatment decisions.

Yes, they can. Body water fluctuates with hormonal cycles, hydration status, recent exercise, and even time of day. This is why we emphasize consistent preparation guidelines and why we compare results as a trend over multiple assessments rather than reacting to any single reading. Context matters when interpreting body composition data.

Visceral fat is the fat stored around internal organs in the abdominal cavity. It is metabolically active in a way that subcutaneous fat is not, meaning it releases inflammatory compounds and hormones that directly increase the risk of insulin resistance, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic syndrome. A person can have a normal body weight and still carry a clinically significant visceral fat level, which is something a standard scale cannot detect.

We track your InBody metrics across sequential assessments and review them alongside your lab results and how you are feeling clinically. An improving trend typically looks like decreasing fat mass and visceral fat alongside maintained or increasing skeletal muscle mass. Losing weight on the scale while losing muscle is not a good outcome, and InBody is precisely what allows us to catch that distinction early.
